Doubts? Questions? Write to support@reeplay.it

July 28th, 2008

Reeplay is a distributed company, so there’s no real center or
headquarter in which things happen: everything, from design, to
meetings, to all exchanges of information, happens online and is collectively managed from different countries. But one
thing needs to be centralized, an that is customer care.

If you want to ask for assistance on some issue, whatever info you may need - or care to share with us - you can write to support@reeplay.it (double E, remember that).

Remember that in order to request new features or support to video services you should use the feedback tab, which will lead you to User Voice, our feedback platform.

Also, you may want to subscribe to this blog’s feed to keep updated with all the stuff happening in Reeplay.it, including new features, and to read some incredibly enlightening thoughts about the ever important role of video on the Net and in our future.

Even if you need no assistance or have no requests, please take a moment to let us know what you think of the service, what giot you stuck or could be made easier to understand/use, and direct any question you might have about Reeplay.it to support@reeplay.it

What a busy week.

I am very happy to announce that, effective from now, the beta is now open.

You can login to reeplay.it withou any invitation code and start using it right away.

Reeplay.it is a tool that allows you to save and organize videos you find on the web and play them back (optimized) on your PC, games console, iPod, media player, or cell phone.

You can then share your favourite videos with your family and friends.

You can even download them to your device by subscribing to the RSS feeds… (and there’s much more to come!)

I hope you enjoy using reeplay.it as much as we enjoyed building it!

Invitations open to beta testers, Carry your videos with you, Plugin update, Bug fixes and more

May 23rd, 2008

At reeplay.it we have been working hard
over recent months to improve the application by introducing new
features, streamlining the user interface, supporting more platforms
and making the whole thing more reliable and bug-free. There is a lot
more to come, and we welcome your feedback, but we hope you are
enjoying reeplay.it already.

Of all this stuff, I want to point out two major things: IE plugin and iPod syncing

1)
Internet Explorer Plugin: we had some problems on certain platforms
with the plugin. Thanks to the cooperation of some beta testers, we
could debug the problem and came up with a patched version. Please
follow the 3 easy steps at the bottom of this email to replace the
present software. By the way, the new release works much better on many
sites.

2) iPod Syncing: I find this really exciting: you can
carry your videos with you; click to save the video, sync your ipod and
voilà!, you have your videos downloaded to your player.

When you
select a playlist on the PC interface, at the top of the right panel
you can see an orange RSS icon. Just drag and drop this icon into
iTunes to subscribe to this playlist as a podcast. All videos contained
in the playlist will be downloaded to your iTunes and you will find
them on your iPod at the next sync.

I setup a specific "ipod"
playlist; all videos I insert in this playlist get synced to my ipod
automagically! I use this extensively with some cartoons for my babies
and with some content I want to watch while on the move (subway,
airplane…); I am very happy with my purchase of an iPod A/V cable so
I connect the iPod to the TV set (at home or in hotels); combined with
reeplay.it it effectively becomes a nice Video on demand-PVR.

You will find below a list of the other features/debugs we have been working on the release presently running.

Now… invitation time has come!

With
the official opening day approaching we have wanted to give you, as a
founding user, the opportunity to invite your friends and family to
join reeplay.it. We hope they will enjoy the service too and that you
will enjoy being able to share videos with the people who are important
to you. In addition we hope that having more testers will help us to
improve the service even further.

If you want to receive  pre-opening invitations, please send me an email!

As ever we are eager to hear your what you have to say. Please feel free to contact me directly or leave us feedback at: http://reeplayit.uservoice.com/

This is just to tell you that tomorrow morning we are going to upgrade our backends.
These operations  will cause some slight discontinuity, which we hope to keep as short as possible!

Where did Reeplay.it idea come from ?

March 26th, 2008

Back in the early 90s, with some university pals, we started the first business ISP in Italy which eventually we sold to BT and listed on the italian stock market.

I resigned from the Board in december 2006 after a couple of years in which I focussed on strategy and regulatory affairs. I was so lucky to build a successful startup (our IPO was 388 times oversubscribed, Italy’s all time record!) and then being part of a multinational corporation, maybe the first operator to transform from the old telephone business model to a Telco 2.0 company.

Inside BT I had the opportunity to meet very smart colleagues and consultants focussing on content hosting and media distribution.

When I left BT group, I resigned as well from my other non-profit position of President of Italy’s main Association of alternative operators, but still kept studying and working on the so called "convergence" (I  learned so much of telcos strategy and walled garden intentions and misbehaviours while legally challenging Italy’s incumbent…).

It was indeed a great experience, as I learned to think of these issues considering technology, market and regulatory perspectives.

I started a lab at my home where I early tested (or beta tested) all sorts of devices and services and had the opportunity to study how my little daughters interacted with all these new applications.

It soon became evident to me that the sources of content are differentiating and that tools for professional or semi-professional production and distribution of video content would have accelerated enabling a proliferation which is just in a small part captured by popular video hosting sites.

I had the opportunity of cooperating with smart persons from the national public broadcaster and some of the most respected experts in social web and free content.

Back in 2006, with some friends an with the experience from my daughters in mind, we conceived and prototyped a settopbox that allowed to easily access free content available on the net, effectively bridging the chasm between the Internet and the TV set.

Why didn’t we go on building the set top box, then ? because it would have been a yet-another device competing against all major device manufacturers; brand is very important in this arena, more than a first mover advantage, so we decided to pull the plug.

I kept tinkering with these things and, after one year, I came out with a view of a likely evolution of regulation, devices, marketing strategies from operators which eventually led to a project which I applied a patent for and which, in turn, led to the birth of Reeplay.it

We are very excited of how things are going and the appreciations we receive from our beta testers. We strongly believe we are going in the right direction, providing users a unique value, once you are set with a supported device at home or on the move.

In my family, our viewing habits have already been changed by Reeplay.it: we spend two-three evenings per week reeplaying content "free to web", be it at home, in a hotel during our holidays or in the car for my girls.

I hope you will share our excitement soon!

Flash video not suitable for iPhone, Apple CEO says

March 6th, 2008

Link: Flash video not suitable for iPhone, Apple CEO says.

Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs said the iPhone won’t be using Adobe Systems’ Inc.’s popular Flash media player any time soon, saying the technology doesn’t meet his company’s performance standards for video.

…Jobs said the version of Flash formatted to personal computers is too slow on the iPhone while the mobile version of the media player is "is not capable of being used with the web,"

Actually *any* "free_to_web" video is of course technically transcoded to enable its playback on the ipod or iphone..

…The iPhone has been praised for its ability to show videos across the full length of the 3.5 inch device, a much larger display than most mobile phones with video capability.

But since the iPhone launched in June of 2007, the way in which it plays video has been criticized for its limited practicality. Users can play Quicktime videos online, but not Flash or Windows Media Video files.

Well, unless you use reeplay.it’s transcoding tool…

Popular online video website YouTube made a fraction of its videos available for the iPhone, but the majority of online videos run on Adobe’s Flash player and so cannot be played on the iPhone.

We are now in private beta, apply today to be on top of the list !
